Directory Services Inc. (DSI): A Pivotal Force in Gay Publishing History

In the 1960s, Directory Services Inc. (DSI) emerged as one of the first major gay-oriented publishing and distribution companies in the United States. Based in Minneapolis and co-founded by Conrad Germain and Lloyd Spinar, DSI became known for producing and distributing physique and male-erotic magazines — including publications that pushed the boundaries of what could legally be shown in print. By the mid-1960s, DSI was one of the largest gay-owned enterprises in the world, employing a sizable staff and circulating magazines nationwide.

At a time when homosexuality was criminalized and censorship laws aggressively enforced, DSI played a surprisingly important role in challenging obscenity restrictions. In 1967 the company won a lesser-known but significant legal victory against the U.S. Post Office, which effectively opened the door for male full-frontal nudity in American magazines. This decision helped shift the media landscape and prefigured broader Supreme Court rulings on obscenity the following decade — contributing to the gradual dismantling of censorship against gay imagery in print. DSI’s success reflected both the rising visibility of gay consumer culture and the beginnings of organized resistance to censorship in mid-20th century America.
